چکیده

Challenges in signal detection in the presence of noise arise in many underwater acoustic applications such as active and passive sonar, geophysical surveying, and marine life monitoring. The detection problem is generally formulated within the framework of binary hypothesis testing. An important class of detectors, known as the locally optimum detectors, are designed based on the expectation that the signal of interest is relatively weak compared to noise. The West Indian manatee, added to the endangered species list in 1967, can be routinely found in the shallow Florida waterways and channels. These waterways are heavily utilized by recreational boaters, and a majority of the unnatural manatee deaths are attributed to watercraft collisions. Another major underwater acoustic noise source in Florida channels result from shrimp crackles. Recent research effort has been directed towards developing and implementing advanced signal processing techniques for far range passive acoustic detection of manatee vocalizations. In this paper, the problem of detecting manatee vocalizations in noisy underwater acoustic environments is addressed. Manatee vocalizations are modelled as narrowband, autoregressive, harmonic signals, and boat noise is modelled as a Gaussian process. Two impulsive noise models, the Middleton Class-A and the SαS PDF model for snapping shrimp crackles are investigated. Locally optimal or suboptimal detectors for each noise case are implemented in the form of Gaussian-Gaussian mixture and the Cauchy locally optimal detectors. The performance of these detectors is evaluated through Monte-Carlo simulations and results indicate that the locally optimum Gaussian detector outperforms the non-Gaussian detectors, even when noise contamination is significantly impulsive.

A Novel DOA Estimation Approach for Unknown Coherent Source Groups with Coherent Signals

In this paper, a new combination of Minimum Description Length (MDL) or Eigenvalue Gradient Method (EGM), Joint Approximate Diagonalization of Eigenmatrices (JADE) and Modified Forward-Backward Linear Prediction (MFBLP) algorithms is proposed which determines the number of non-coherent source groups and estimates the Direction Of Arrivals (DOAs) of coherent signals in each group. First, the MDL...

Effect of Underwater Ambient Noise on Quadraphase Phase-shift Keying Acoustic Sensor Network Links in Extremely Low Frequency Band

This study evaluates the impact of underwater ambient noise using seven real noise samples; Dolphin, Rain, Ferry, Sonar, Bubbles, Lightning, and Outboard Motor in three frequency ranges in extremely low frequency (ELF) band. The ELF band is the most significant bandwidth for underwater long-range communication. ELF band which is extended from 3 to 3000 Hz clearly, faces bandwidth limitation. Me...

A New Method for Detection of Backscattered Signals from Breast Cancer Tumors: Hypothesis Testing Using an Adaptive Entropy-Based Decision Function

Introduction In recent years methods based on radio frequency waves have been used for detecting breast cancer. Using theses waves leads to better results in early detection of breast cancer comparing with conventional mammography which has been used during several years. Materials and Methods In this paper, a new method is introduced for detection of backscattered signals which are received by...

A New Algorithm for Voice Activity Detection Based on Wavelet Packets (RESEARCH NOTE)

Speech constitutes much of the communicated information; most other perceived audio signals do not carry nearly as much information. Indeed, much of the non-speech signals maybe classified as ‘noise’ in human communication. The process of separating conversational speech and noise is termed voice activity detection (VAD). This paper describes a new approach to VAD which is based on the Wavelet ...

JASA Methods for Automatically Extracting Bioacoustic Structure

This paper presents mathematical methods for automatically extracting and analysing bioacoustic signals. Automatic techniques are described for isolation of target signals from background noise, extraction of features from target signals and unsupervised classification (clustering) of the target signals based on these features. The only user-provided inputs, other than raw sound, are 6 control ...
